There are some candid insights too—while the empanadas may not dazzle everyone, the overall experience encourages guests to explore the varied menu, with many eager to return for other specialties like the coconut fish dish. A minor challenge with the entrance and parking prompts a bit of advance planning, but these small hurdles don’t diminish the genuine warmth and authenticity of La Colonia.
In sum, La Colonia Restaurant is a true gem for those craving an immersive journey into Ecuadorian and Colombian flavors right in Minneapolis. Whether you’re drawn by the boldness of Bandeja Paisa, the richness of seafood soups, or the festive energy of the dining room, this spot delivers a memorable feast that appeals to all the senses and leaves you eager for your next visit.
The paisa meal was delicious. The empanadas not so much. I was exited to try them and was really disspointed as there was no flavor at all to them. I tried a bite n left the rest. Maybe try the cheese one..? I'll go back as they have a coconut fish dish that looked delicious and I want to try it.
I think about this place often because the food was nothing like I’ve had before — and it was just that good. The drinks were perfectly balanced — fruity but not too sweet — exactly what I needed to unwind, and they definitely delivered the right vibe for the night. The atmosphere is lively with great music that keeps the energy up without being overwhelming. Parking is available but limited, so it’s best to arrive early if you’re driving. If you’re looking for an authentic Ecuadorian experience with bold flavors and a fun, welcoming environment, this spot should be at the top of your list.
I stopped in on May 10th for a breakfast dish and ordered the Bandeja Paisa. This has aros blanco con frijoles, chicharon, arepa, aguacate, carne asada, sweet plantain and chorizo (Colombian style sausage). Was not disappointed. I wish I had another arepa to clean the plate. The service was very good and quick. The food didn’t take too long and had a very pleasant atmosphere. As I travel thru the twin cities a lot I love trying different places. This one is definitely a must re-visiting again. The quality of the taste with its spices made me wish I had more room for more. Thank you La Colonia Restaurant
First time dining here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The atmosphere is casual. Service was fine and got our meals in decent time. We both ordered the steak with rice, beans and fried plantain. It was delicious. Steak was thin but had decent flavor. The fried plantain was very good. We ordered a second plate of it. Good selection of beer and other alcoholic beverages. Enjoyed our dinner and would return again.
It was a first time experience eating Columbian food. Overall the experience was good . The entrance was confusing we thought the place was closed for each door that we tried was locked but we could see people eating. So there had to be a way in. Perhaps the proprietor never enters the restaurant from the front door because there was graffiti painted on it and it didn’t look very welcoming. The tables were in ill condition as many of the tops were scratched and the finish was peeling off. Paper napkins and pitted cheap flatware. You might find in their country but it doesn’t pass for very good service here. Especially for the prices we paid. What I could see in the dim lighting the floors were in good repair though dull and dirty looking. The decor matched the theme with paintings or prints of village life. As for the food it was very starchy and tasteless. plantains and yucca fried up crunchy but virtually the same as potatoes. Even the sauces were dull and faintly flavored. They brought popcorn to the table as a preamble to the appetizers. I got a huge platter of chicken beef and pork sausage, then some sweet plantains. And then there were potato wedges, thick cut yucca patties, some cilantro sprinkled a cross the top But it all tasted the same even with the sauces. Which is all right for the British or Swedish palate but not mine.
The food? Fantastic. Not too familiar with Columbian food so this visit was quite the discovery. All the customers I sawthere were South American, so I know I'm in for some authentic stuff. I never knew they had fried rice in the Americas, and boy was I in for a surprise. Has everything that makes fried rice good and makes it better! Pretty damn good and really, really big portions. Almost to a fault! Definite recommend, especially if you've never tried this cuisine. Ask the waiter/waitress what their favorites are, and let your mind open to new flavors!
Very nice eating experience. Vegan friendly. The food is pretty good and very affordable. The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. I would recommend La Colonia to anyone.
Food is good, not extraordinary but good. Never had Ecuadorian food so good exposure. Kind of a mix of Puerto Rico and Mexican. The soup of the day was amazing though. Service is very good especially for it being very busy and 1 hour before close. Place is a bit run down and a bit pricey
